iFixit has partnered with Chipworks to take an in-depth look at the iPad’s custom A4 processor. The report includes x-ray images and physical cross-sections of the chip.
The report confirms that Apple is using a single-core design in a “package-on-package” design. This design allows Apple to the chips layers of RAM and the actual microprocessor.
There’s nothing revolutionary here. In fact, the A4 is quite similar to the Samsung processor Apple uses in the iPhone. The primary focus of this design was minimizing power consumption and cost.
The processor appears to be built upon the Cortex A8 design. You can check out iFixit’s awesome tear-down here.
