Chitika, an advertising company, has a counter on their site which is adding together the number of unique hits from iPads on their ad network. At the time of this writing the total number of iPads sold are just shy of 550,000 units.
On the company’s blog, Dan Ruby points out that Chitika’s results are lower than Apple’s official, and other estimates. The explanation for this, is that some users aren’t accessing the web. For instance, Apple had already announced that they had sold “over 300,000”, while Chitka was only counting 270,000.
We’ve also learned that the WiFi iPad may not be seen as primarily an Internet surfing device. With estimates of over 300,000 iPads sold on release day and perhaps as many as 700,000 sold over the weekend, that only around 40% are showing up on the Internet may imply that people are buying the iPad for the apps, and spending most of their browsing time in the App Store.
So, these numbers look impressive on one hand, and underwhelming on the other depending on who’s estimates you compare them to. Some estimates already claim that 750,000 iPads have been sold already.
