Smaller iPad Coming Early 2011?

DigiTimes is reporting that Apple is plannig to launch a smaller version iPad as early as Q1 of 2011. The new device would be in the sub-$400 price range and the display would be somewhere in the 5-7 inch range.

Apple is reportedly scheduling a smaller 5- to 7-inch version of the iPad that is expected to launch as soon as the first quarter of 2011, according to Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo.

Kuo, citing talks with upstream component sources, said Apple’s smaller-size iPad will be priced below US$400 and will target the highly-portable mobile device market and consumers that focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input.

Prior to the iPad announcement several reports had been issued by varying media sources claiming the iPad’s screen would be in the 7-11 inch range. However, Apple ultimately announced the 9.7-inch screen the iPad has today.

When will this be called an iPod touch? Seriously, there’s already complaints regarding the size of soft-keyboard on iPad, what reason would Apple make a smaller one? If anything they’ll introduce a larger one, and that won’t be for some time if at all.
