First Impressions: Egretlist for iPhone, syncing your task list with Evernote

Egretlist ($2.99) might well be the new Awesome Note of task managers. I say that from a very subjective standpoint, since I think Awesome Note looks amazing (awesome, even), but is simply too visually overwhelming to use on a day-to-day basis. It ‘s true that interfaces eventually become part of the background as you get used to them, but I ‘m finding Egretlist just a little too sharp and stylized so far, and that has made the approach difficult. The fact that it uses Evernote as its two-way sync partner is also a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Evernote offers a free OTA syncing service, but it isn ‘t exactly known for its task management capabilities, and that definitely concerns me.

Egretlist is still just a 1.0 release and has a lot of room to grow, but Evernote already has an established desktop and mobile presence, and task management hasn ‘t been one of their major priorities thus far. In fact, the only way you can interact with task items is by digging right into a note and ticking it off ” there isn ‘t any archiving option outside of Egretlist, and there aren ‘t any easy ways to triage your tasks or even set due dates in any Evernote client.

I don ‘t mean to be all negative, though: Egretlist does have a gorgeous, stylized UI. We ‘re not just talking different icons here: the layout in Egretlist is different than anything I ‘ve ever seen in iPhone task manager. It ‘s incredibly easy to add multiple tasks to the same list, and it ‘s also dead simple to add extra pictures and audio notes to most any item ” once you find out how.

I hope to have a review up in a few days, but my first impression of Egretlist is that it ‘s a blindingly bold new interface. The developers have stated that they have no association with Evernote at all (a shame, since Evernote has already worked with several other iPhone devs to help integrate their service), and that has left me wondering why they chose to use Evernote as their sync partner in the first place. Was there something wrong with other cloud task managers like Remember the Milk (paid) or Toodledo (free/paid)?

Watch this space over the next few days for more.
