John Gruber of Daring Fireball fame, has a post wherein he claims that Apple has diverted company resources from the Mac OS X team to the iPhone OS team. That means, Mac OS X 10.7 (the upcoming version of Mac OS X) may very well be delayed until sometime in 2011.
A few months ago, I heard suggestions that Apple had tentative plans to release a developer beta of Mac OS X 10.7 at WWDC this June. That is no longer the case. Mac OS X 10.7 development continues, but with a reduced team and an unknown schedule. It’s my educated guess that there will be no 10.7 news at WWDC this year, and probably none until WWDC 2011.
There have been rumblings that Apple is working on Mac OS X 10.7 since November. With a 30-month space between the release 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard. Then there was 22-month space between the release of Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard. So, given the delays in Mac OS X releases in the past, it’s not a stretch to think Mac OS X 10.7 is still some ways out.
