Customers of TD Canada Trust now have a free iPhone app to use (iTunes link), making it ridiculously easy to initiate payments and transfer funds even when you don’t have access to a full-fledged computer.
The TD app is composed of three tabs, but the app would have been fine with two. The first tab, Home, is merely a portal to sets of telephone numbers and websites, as well as a few sets of FAQs. The content in the first tab feels like filler, and could easily have been a “more info” button with a link to the TD website.
The second tab shows locations of nearby investor centers, branches, and ABMs. This information can be laid over a map, or shown in a list. Unfortunately, it only seems to show branches in your proximity, and you can’t use the app to find branches around an area you know you’ll be visiting.
The final tab is where the real meat of the app is: actual mobile banking. You can check the balances on your various chequing, savings, and credit card accounts, and even schedule payments of money transfers. In other words, all of the most important tasks you carry out over TD’s EasyWeb service can now be done on the iPhone. The app can remember your TD login, but you’ll have to re-enter your password every time you reload (which is the way it should be with your money).
Despite my poo-pooing of the first tab, I’m quite pleased with the TD app. It features all of the benefits of prying eyes at the coffee shop, although you will have to deal with the hassle of mobile access. Actually, I may have gotten that last sentence mixed up, but at least I’ll be giving my privacy film a workout (*shameless plug*).
