Apple Issues Two More Firmware Updates for 27-Inch iMacs

Apple has released two more updates for the the 27-inch iMac. These two updates address issues such as high processor usage, display backlight problems, and target display mode issues experienced by some users.

First up is an update called, 27-inch iMac EFI FW Update 1.0. This update is 2.1MB in size, requires users to be running Mac OS X 10.6.3, and of course is recommended for all quad-core iMac users. Here are the issues it addresses:

– Resolves an issue that sometimes caused high processor utilization while playing audio through the headphone output mini-jack.

– Resolves an issue that prevented the display backlight from turning on after powering on the iMac.

These processor problems sound shockingly familiar to a problem Apple addressed in February where Mac Pros where performance suffered and excess heat was created by these machines while performing seemingly mundane audio tasks.

The second update called, 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0, offers compatibility fixes for Target Display Mode. This 27″ iMac-only feature, allows users to turn their iMac into a secondary display via the machine’s Mini DisplayPort. This update requires Mac OS X 10.6.3, and the 27-inch iMac EFI FW Update 1.0 mentioned above.
