Quick iPhone Tip: Using Awesome Note for journaling instead of Momento

While I was away, Awesome Note apparently added something awesome (surprise, surprise). They call it the Diary view, but I call it a great Momento App replacement.

Sure, Awesome Note won’t import your Facebook and Twitter updates and create a you-centric timeline of events like Momento does, but it does feature OTA backups and landscape editing — two things that Momento still sorely lacks. Awesome Note also features an equally gorgeous interface, that has finally matured to a stage where I can really enjoy using it.I don’t really keep many journal entries (I’ll start and stop), but I love the idea of having my thoughts archived and shown in a very relevant format. I simply keep individual notes as journal entries, and keep them in their very own folder. Diary view shows these notes organized by date (as shown above), which is why it reminds me so much of Momento.

I can also view entries in chronological order, organized by title, or look them up on the monthly calendar organized by creation date. It goes without saying that this all looks bloody awesome, but it’s the extra functionality that really gets me. Awesome Note’s menus are much easier to use now, and although the application is feature-packed, the features don’t feel packed in.

I had been on the fence about purchasing Awesome Note for quite a while, but it was the Diary view that tipped the scales. I now keep a special Evenote notebook for quick journal accounts of the day’s events (complete with pics), knowing full well that my thoughts are easily transferrable to other apps, should I one day want to switch things up.

The only downside here is the lack of geo-location (not a big deal for me, but perhaps for others) and the lack of a streamlined syncing service. Awesome Note does initiate full two-way syncing with Evernote, but you’ll need to start your notebook names with “[aNote]”, and the manual sync isn’t very fast (about five to eight seconds).

On the other hand, full two-way syncing was only added a couple of updates ago, and I’m hoping Awesome Note can streamline the process even more, and make it nearly as seamless as it is with Evernote’s native iPhone client. They haven’t promised anything of the sort, mind you, but I can hope 🙂
