Need More Scobleizer? There’s an App for That

Robert Scoble iPhone app

If you’re an iPhone  owner and a fan of Robert Scoble – the world’s best know tech blogger, and one of the best known bloggers of any kind – then here’s some good news.  The Robert Scoble iPhone app has just been released.  Here’s a quick idea of what it offers:

Robert Scoble’s Official Mobile Application featuring his blog, photos, videos, adventures and more. Stay connected with all the latest updates from Scoble on the go.

I am a fan of Scoble, a big fan actually.  I think he is easily the best ‘sharer’ on the internet if you’re at all interested in technology related subjects.  He’s continually producing good new content himself – introducing new startups, new apps, new technology, and providing some great analysis on where things are headed. He’s also constantly sharing great content from an amazing array of other great sources round the web.

I can’t think of any other source that has led me to discover as many interesting new apps and services round the web – via his blog, his video interviews and demos, Twitter, Friendfeed, and so on.

He also always strikes me as just a hell of a good guy – not at all arrogant due to his high profile, and always willing to talk via whatever medium you hit him up on (he even still puts his cell phone number right on his blog’s front page).

Anyway, this post wasn’t intended as a homage to Scoble.  All the above is just my long-winded way of saying there are very few individuals or individual web sites that would interest me at all as the subject of a standalone iPhone app; but Scoble is definitely one of them.

Generally, my view is that I don’t want to give up precious home screen space (or in my case folder space in PogoPlank) for a single news / information source. That’s what RSS apps are for.

Scoble is a worthwhile exception to that principle though – because the dude is stark raving nuts in his soaking up of everything that’s going on in the tech world.  He follows a billion interesting people and organizations on Twitter and other social services, seems to talk to everyone who’s doing anything new and interesting, and is continually liking and sharing the best of what he sees and learns.  If you’re looking for creative ways to keep up with tech news while reducing your RSS feeds, just follow Scoble.

Scobleizer

So what about the new Robert Scoble app? It’s pretty good.  I think the name should’ve been Scobleizer, but maybe there was some problem with using that.

The app’s main sections are: News, Videos, and Photos.  The News section offers ‘Official’, ‘Twitter’, and ‘Buzz’ sub-sections – Official shows content generated by Scoble himself, Twitter and Buzz offer just what their names suggest.   You can login via Twitter or Facebook to add a comment to any of the streams.

The Photos section is a bit sparse at the moment, but I expect it will grow quickly as I know Scoble is a prolific snapper.

The Videos section is probably the best part of the app for me.  It’s full of cool interviews and demos, all rendered via YouTube so they’re playable on the iPhone.

There’s also a ‘More’ section, but this looks to be mostly merchandising stuff at the moment.

The app is a universal binary, so it is iPad ‘compatible’ – but it really doesn’t look good on the iPad.

I’ve only spent a little time with the app so far, but it’s a keeper for me.  It’s about time Scoble had an iPhone app – and it looks like a pretty good Version 1.  Hopefully there will be more to come in future updates.

You can find the Robert Scoble app in the App Store now – and it’s a free app.
