Valve Releases More Information Regarding Upcoming Steam Release for Mac

As you may remember, Valve Software announced in March that they would be releasing their Steam game delivery system for the Mac sometime in April. April has come and nearly gone and still no release. However, MacRumors is reporting on an extensive Valve thread that supplies some new information. As for the release date? “Coming Soon.”

The Steam client will be Intel-only and requires Mac OS X Leopard. Some games may still require later versions of OS X. Systems using Intel X3100 or 900 series graphics are not supported.

Most intriguing is the Steam Play feature:

Other details coming out of the beta testing are confirmation regarding Steam Play, which will allow users to purchase a game only once and play it on multiple systems, as well as corroboration that Windows and Mac users will play on the same servers with the ability to join the same lobbies.

It seems that only Portal is playable in the closed beta at the moment, but will likely soon include games like Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2.

This disappoints me. With a release date of “coming soon,” and a closed beta featuring only one game, I suspect we won’t see a public release for a while.
