An iPhone (plus jailbreak) Saves the Day Story

MyWi iPhone tethering app

It’s always good to hear about cool ways that people use iPhone apps to help them in their jobs or just in life in general.  It’s even better to hear a genuine ‘My iPhone Saved the Day’ type story.

Last night I received a very good one from one of our readers, Andrew.  It involves his jailbroken iPhone, a big meeting and demo, the need to include someone at a distant location in the meeting, and the MyWi (jailbreak) tethering app.

Here is Andrew’s story:

well, really it was my jailbroken iPhone 3GS…  Really does not get any better than this.

Had flown from Portland, Or to NY for a meeting with a cable network.  Needless to say, this was an important meeting. Unfortunately, one of the key participants from the network had to run home to attend to a family event.  OK — no problem, I think.  They have an ethernet connection in the meeting room.  We’ll just plug in; set up an instant Webex meeting…no problem.

Wait…problem.  None of the ethernet ports in this meeting room work.  But, again — no problem.  For one of my colleagues has an AT&T wireless card.  I’ll just plug it in my Macbook Pro, download the app that connects me to the network and away we go.  So, I do that… download the app. And… arrrrg, it wants me to reboot.  (Now during all of this, I’m teeing up the demo…talking slooooowly.)

OK, rebooted, we’re now ready to go…. no, no we are not ready to go.  I cannot access the network from this card.  No time to figure it out; plan C — which should have been plan A — use my iPhone running MyWi.  My concern and reason for not doing that in the first place is that I had to run a webex and then log onto our remote system for the demo.  But now I had no choice.

I turn on MyWi
My Macbook connects to the Internet
I access Webex; set up an instant meeting
Prospect logs on
I access our remote system, and run the demo
It all worked perfectly….

Great stuff.  Thanks Andrew for sharing this with us.  If you’ve got any cool ‘iPhone saved the day’ stories, or anything similar, we’d love to hear them.  Send them to contact AT justanotheriphoneblog dot com.  We’re also to hear any good iPhone related stories – they don’t all have to have happy endings. 🙂
