Case Review: SwitchEasy Nude – Clear for iPhone

I found the idea behind the SwitchEasy NUDE quite fascinating: an ultra-thin (0.8 mm) transparent shell that mimics the form and feel of a “naked” iPhone while protecting the device from scuffs and scratches. Unfortunately, fitting issues keep this case from ever convincing you that your iPhone is just in its birthday suit.

Appearance
The NUDE comes in other colours, but I received the transparent model for review. A good 95% of the NUDE looks clear when you ‘re not holding the phone. The case frames the iPhone beautifully (particularly around the buttons) and creates an ultra glossy shine over the whole of the back plate. Basically, if you love the look of the iPhone by default, then you ‘ll love the look of the NUDE. It ‘s almost like having a transparent film on your device, but without the hassle of installation (just snap the case into place, and you ‘re done).

Protection
The NUDE covers almost all of the iPhone 3GS, leaving only the bottom area and necessary button/camera/port openings exposed via cut-outs. As with most SwitchEasy cases, you’ll also receive two free crystal screen protectors. They’re pretty easy to apply, and look great.
The case itself is a little more scratch resistant than the iPhone ‘s own back plate, and you ‘ll have to look very, very closely to really notice any.

Fit
The appeal of the NUDE is the illusion that you ‘re not even using a case, and although the case adds virtually no weight, it often makes itself very apparent. The iPhone fits the NUDE to a tee, but it ‘s all too easy for little pockets of air to get trapped between the phone and the case, forming unseemly grey splotches near the camera and the charging port. You can temporarily remove these splotches by lifting those areas of the case ever so slightly, but they ‘ll simply come right back as you hold the case in your hand. I ‘ve tried to clean the case and the iPhone with micro fiber cloth to alleviate the issue, but nothing has worked so far.

Another issue I have with the case are the noises it makes: unlike the other SwitchEasy case I reviewed, the NUDE tends to creak quite a lot along the bottom. Simply holding the phone in your hand can cause clicking (which can, in turn, cause more grey spots). These issues are all cosmetic ones ” but since I see this case as a cosmetic accessory as much as it is a protective one ” I consider these to be rather serious issues. I ‘m not the only one to report them either, unfortunately.

Conclusion
I was fortunate to receive this case for review – and although I really do like the idea behind the look – the splotching and creaking marred the experience for me. The coloured versions of this case might work better, but if you’re looking into the version I’ve just reviewed, I’d recommend you stop right there, as this NUDE clearly has some issues.

You can find the SwitchEasy NUDE online for about $30 from Mobile Fun’s 3GS Accessories page. Alternatively, you can pick the case up straight from SwitchEasy’s website.
