I am aware that this post is about 14 weeks old and the last post was 4 weeks ago, but i was wondering if anyone could help me out.
So I was trying to help my friend get the spirit jailbreak on her Brand Spanking New Itouch 3G, and i had spirit Downloaded and everything was ready to go. I tried to restore is for her but there was an error, that I cannot quote exactly, saying that itunes could not allow a restore. Is there a reason for this? Also, would it be okay to do the Spirit jailbreak without a restore? I am just afraid that if it doe snot work or whatever we will not be able to restore it back to factory settings and it will just be stuck until we can.

Any help would be Greatly appreciated, thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

Or would the jailbreak go away? Pleaseee. I would like to know. And if the jailbreak does go away, do you know any apps I can get to get the free music? Except for dTunes because that doesn't have one of the songs I want!!!

Also when I installed dTunes another app came up it was named Terminal. But I deleted dTunes…And that didn't delete with it. I would like to know if I would need that/how to get rid of it.

P.S. I'm only 14…So don't use worlds I probably wouldn't know. xDDD
Thanks.

It still connects to itunes and shows as a device. I have tried to restore it but have not been able to do so. Error message comes up saying "Not eligible for requested build". Can anyone give me any tips as to how I can restore my ipod touch. I have also heard that once jailbroken I can never update itunes as if I do my ipod touch will never work again. Is this true/

But I did a hard reboot, again. Then after a while (30, 40 seconds) connected it to iTunes and waited … and waited, and waited. An finally it booted up.

did you turn off iTunes before activating Spirit? If not, you'll get an error. As for your phone not turning on — I think it's either out of power or you haven't held the power and home buttons for long enough. From what I've read (as well as personal experience) it's pretty difficult to really, irrevocably brick an iPhone, so you should still be alright.

If you do get back on track and encounter another error, I'd suggest you take note of what it is so you can Google it later.

The colorful screen came up at the end for over 3 hours. I tried to restore the phone through itunes, but a message would pop up in the end saying something like system not designed for build or something like that. I decided to hold down the power button, and middle button for 10 seconds. Now, the phone won't turn on at all. Did I screw up badly?

So I went to itune and sync the phone thinking that was the correct way to back up my phone but i have since read its not. So am I screwed not if I need to restore my phone?

same problem here. I'm restoring my 3GS 3.1.3 right now. It's going to take forever, I should have done it with a little more time.

I have the iphone 3G 3.1.3 OS. I backed up my phone, downloaded spirit, closed out of itunes, and started the program just like the instructions said. When it said it was done on my computer I pressed the button in the middle to close spirit. The multicolored screen with the bar froze when full for over 10 minutes. I restarted my phone pressing both buttons and it got stuck on the apple.

The solution: Put it in DFU mode (both buttons for exactly 10 secs and then the bottom button for exactly 10 secs using a clock), restore on itunes. Then, I tried spirit again but this time I clicked jailbreak and then waited until my phone was completely rebooted before closing. I never clicked in the middle again. It could be that it just takes a few tries or that people like me are confused by that middle button saying close or exit and clicking it too soon.

Either way, it was scary but my phone rebooted just as it was and spirit eventually did load. Thanks!

An iTunes backup and successful sync before attempting jailbreak should cover most of your needs. You need to check that you are selecting to sync your photos, music, contacts etc. Things like notes, call history, SMS archives, and the Camera Roll on the iPhone are not covered by iTunes, so you'll want to manually export data from those or look for third party apps that will help access those areas.

You can't – you need to fix that issue first. Try connecting via a different USB port, or with a different sync cable for starters.

As I understand it, I need to back up everything – photos, music, apps – restore the phone using iTunes, then jailbreak it with Spirit, and finally restore all my apps and info. I have a few Q's:
– What about Contacts, Notes and SMS archives? Will I lose all this info?
– I have to back everything up separately, don't I? Or does iTunes back it up all together?

Thanks to anyone who may help me with these ๐Ÿ™‚

I would imagine it will be just like a standard phone in that area – as in yes they would still find out. Then again, I know almost nothing about that subject as it's not something I ever wanted to do or that I would suggest anyone try doing.

I used only wi-fi but within 2 days I received a message from AT&T saying that because I have an iphone they are adding a data plan to my account (since any smart phone has to have a data plan on AT&T).They removed the data package when I removed the sim and called them from a different phone (not smart-phone). If I jailbrake my iphone can I use it with AT&T or they would still find out that I'm using a smart phone?

Connect your iPhone to your PC via its sync cable, go into iTunes, and choose Restore.

I think it's a fair bit of both factors. Jailbreaks are better and better, and the 3GS is just an arse-kicking, name-taking, rock solid device. ๐Ÿ™‚

I was always into messing with my iPhone and downloading new apps. I purchased the 3GS on launch day and didn't jailbreak it until last week with Spirit and had no problems. The 3GS works great jailbroken, it seems just as fast with 5 or 6 apps open at the same time. SB setting, Backgrounder, Overboard, ProSwitcher and Winterboard all work great with no hiccups, I feel like I have a new system. Now all I need is the new iPhone that should be here in late June.

It seem like the jailbreak is a lot more stable now days compared to the 1st generation iPhone days or the 1st Generation iPhone just couldn't handle it as good. It just seems like there were more little bugs all the time back then and the phone wasn't as responsive.

I just got a new iPod Touch 3G 32GB and the thing froze up on me the first time I tried Spirit. After a restore it worked like magic the second time though. Can't really complain though, at least it didn't brick anything. I'm glad you posted this article, it made me feel better about just starting over and restoring.

I made a full backup of my 3GS before I started, because I've read that some users had lost their Camera roll pictures. After Spirit had done its job, I made a restore from backup, and I was good to go. The whole process took about five minutes.
