[JPEG on left, PNG on right]
This is really a tip for users who take a lot of iPhone screenshots for web sites (hi, friends!). I use Pastebot for almost all of my image transferring, and I’ve noticed that it can export images to my Mac in two formats: .jpg and .png. Copying images to the clipboard and then loading Pastebot up will import the shots as PNG files, whereas simply adding them one by one via the “add from library” button will result in a JPEG. What’s the difference? Picture quality and file size.
In general, we at JAiB try to keep our image sizes small, so that mobile and desktop users alike can load our pages quickly. The JPEGs that Pastebot creates are usually around 33kb in size, whereas the PNGs weigh in at around 150kb — nearly five times the size. However, I think the PNG looks a bit more like what I actually see on my iPhone lock screen.
Ideally, I’d be using PNGs all the time to preserve the quality of my shots, but until I get the facts straight on the optimal image sizes for web sites, I’ll probably be sticking to JPEG. However, it’s good to know that Pastebot has some flexibility when it comes to image exporting.
