Square, the service that is looking to make credit card payments easier and cheaper than ever before, is now ready to handle your US transactions. All you need to do is download the free Square app from the App Store, sign up, wait for your credit check to finish, and your free Square credit card reader will be right on its way. The card reader is free and slips right into your 3.5mm port (so you can’t listen to wired headphones while charging customers :P), but using it will charge you based on the rates listed in the above screenshot, with a transaction limit of $100, up to $700 per week (via TopiPhoneResource). There are no activation, gateway, monthly, or early termination fees.
I played with the app as much as I could without actually going through a credit check, which is to say not very much at all. It is very, very good looking, and can automate certain aspects, like the addition of taxes or tips. All receipts are handled electronically, so you can see how much you’ve spent or received through your personal Square account.
I’m still not sure if this is all that useful for the average consumer, but it should be a real boon for small businesses, since it saves people the hassle of renting all of those expensive credit card readers.
