Opera Mini 5.0.2 for iPhone: now usable

Here’s my public service announcement for the day: after having played with the app for a little while now, I do hereby proclaim Opera Mini to be a heck of a lot more usable than before — and not just with mobile websites. The latest version, 5.0.2, is a lot better than the one I slammed just one month ago. This is what Opera should have waited to release, and what would have avoided a lot of the negative feedback from tech blogs.

The interface is still mainly the same, but the big difference is that this proxy browser will now correctly load mobile versions of sites, specifically ones based on WordPress (like JAiB). To make a short story even shorter: if you were hesitant about Opera Mini before, this newest version is probably worth another look.

It won’t become your primary browser, and it can still look a little awkward when you load complicated sites (example: IGN.com) and text re-flow destroys their layouts, but it’s really the only way to make surfing on EDGE bearable (after having been spoiled by 3G and wi-fi speeds). The app is still free, so there’s really nothing to lose, aside from a little bit of storage space.
