Bloomberg is reporting that Wal-Mart is expected to carry the iPad in-store sometime “later this year.” As you may well know, Wal-Mart already sells the iPhone 3GS and all iPod models, making the the iPad a logical addition.
“We anticipate being able to have the iPad later this year,” Gary Severson, senior vice president of entertainment for Wal-Mart’s U.S. stores, said in a telephone interview. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company isn’t prepared to provide specifics on the timing and pricing of the iPad, he said.
Apple has not commented on the report, and has not made any annoucements regarding retail partnerships since the iPad launched in April. At the moment, iPads can only be purchased through Apple’s online and retails stores, and at Best Buy locations with an Apple “store” inside.
I wouldn’t expect to see these at Wal-Mart anytime soon however. Apple is having a terrible time keeping up with demand as it is, let alone supplying another retailer with these devices. I would expect Apple to have most of their supply problems ironed out by the holiday season, and by extension, the iPad on sale at Wal-Mart at that time.
