Is Nirvana Revenge worth the $4.99 purchase price for 13 tracks? If you like Tap Tap Revenge gameplay and Nirvana, hell yes.

Standard Tap Tap Revenge 3 gameplay

The standard Tap Tap Revenge rules apply in Nirvana Revenge: tap on one of the there hot spots at the bottom in time with the beat, and you’ll score a point. Executing a flawless streak of taps will sometimes net you bonuses, which will rest on either side of the screen until activated by a tap. These bonuses grant you a 16x point multiplier for 10 seconds, but also have the (likely unintended) effect of blinding you by making the top half of the screen glow white. Take it from me: it ‘s best to put your sunglasses on before you activate the multiplier.

You can play the game in one of four difficulty levels, and certain songs will remain locked until you ‘ve completed at least half of the songs at that level (ex. ‘Come as you are ‘ is locked on Medium mode). Your scores are tallied every time you complete a song and are submitted to the Tapulous scoreboards.

Finally, there ‘s a 1v1 Bluetooth multiplayer mode, but I didn ‘t have any nearby Nirvana fans to test this out with.

What ‘s Different?

Right off the bat, it ‘s easy to notice that Nirvana Revenge looks a heck of a lot better than the original Tap Tap Revenge 3 app. It looks polished and less cartoony, and a lot more like the premium $6.99  Rock Band app, which is a good thing.

There are also interesting little extras called ‘Nightly Nirvana ‘, which feature sound clips from interviews with the band. The App Store description would also have me mention the band ‘s biography as an extra feature, but it ‘s really just an interesting extra tidbit ” hardly worth mentioning as a reason for buying the app.

10 Nirvana Tracks, with three extra live tracks

When I first heard about this game, the one song that came to mind was ‘Come as you are ‘, which I learned to love thanks to the movie ‘Definitely, Maybe ‘. I ‘m sure different Nirvana fans will have different favourites, although it should be noted that the 13 tracks (full list here) are really just 10, with an extra three live versions of ‘Breed ‘, ‘Lithium ‘, and ‘Smells like Teen Spirit ‘.

Although I didn ‘t care for any of the live tracks (sorry hardcore Nirvana fans!), I found most of the tracks entertaining and easy to play along with on Medium mode. The game isn ‘t too demanding on the player in terms of the timing required, so you ‘ll still earn points even if you tap a few milliseconds too early or too late.

Conclusion

Nirvana Revenge is offered for a fair price, considering there are 10 different songs, and three live tracks. Most TTR3 tracks are offered at a rate of $0.99 for two songs, and Nirvana Revenge matches that pricing scheme ($4.99 for 10), and throws in three live tracks, a superior graphical look, and a few interesting tidbits in the form of ‘Nightly Nirvana ‘. The game isn ‘t available to import in Tap Tap Revenge 3 yet, but if you ‘re a fan of Nirvana and rhythm-based music games, then this should be nerdvana for you 🙂

Nirvana Revenge is available on the App Store for $4.99
