We’ve heard a lot over the last few months about how much faster the reviews / approval process for the iPhone App Store has become. It appears there are still some major exceptions though.
Our friends over at Appsfire have let us know that their 2.0 release has been in a review holding pattern for more than 7 weeks now. Worst of all, just like in the bad old days, they are receiving little or no communication from Apple to let them know what’s going on.
The Appsfire guys have got a blog post up where they’ve vented some of their frustration in a conversation about this. Here’s a little slice of it:
Ouriel: Yann, why is our version 2.0 still not approved by Apple?
Yann: Frankly, I don’t know – in the past 6 weeks, the App Review team has given us nothing but "sorry it’s taking longer than usual" type emails. I’m not new to this as I’ve already pushed a dozen high budget apps through the process, succesfully too!
Ouriel: But 95% of the apps typically get approved in under 7 days right?
Yann: Correct. I guess this means we’re in the "elite" 5%; and over 30 days puts us with top guns like Opera and Google. Cool huh?
Ouriel: Not! 6 weeks almost 7, c’mon!!! that’s a super long time to review an app that’s really just an upgrade of our v1.0 already in the store since August 2009!!!
Yann: True, but in fact, I think the App Review team is no longer reviewing it. They tested the app a couple of times a few weeks ago (we see an IP trail from Cupertino), but that’s about it. Long springbreak? No. I think they’re sitting on it. Perhaps they’re taking advantage of their position unfairly; they have something in the pipe and feel threatened by us.
I don’t know what has changed in their 2.0 version, but on the face of it this does seem a terribly long time for just an app update to be held up in review. Even if there are valid reasons for delay or rejection of the update, the lack of communication is the real killer blow.
Here’s hoping the Appsfire guys hear more soon, and that Apple is continuing to work on improving the Review process.
