International iBookstore to Only Have Titles From the Project Gutenburg Titles at Launch?

The Bookseller is reporting that the selection in the international iBookstore may be scarce at launch. In fact, the Project Gutenberg titles that appeared in the store last week may be the only titles international users may have to chose from for some time. At least while Apple hammers out deals with content providers.

Apple’s iPad is unlikely to have more than a limited selection of e-books for its launch tomorrow (28th May), with not one publisher confirming it had a deal in place just hours before the device hits the shelves.

Although it has been widely rumored Hachette UK and Penguin were close to finalizing deals, no one from either company has confirmed or denied whether that is the case.

What’s the holdup? Well, the report states that Apple has understaffed their side of the negotiations. Only two Apple employees are in charge of negotiations deals for Europe. This fact, coupled with publisher’s fear of the “agency model,” it seems that paid content may be a ways out for our international friends.
