Engadget is reporting that they have received information outlining Apple’s revamp of the Apple TV. They claim that the device will resemble “an iPhone without a screen.” It will also be based on next-gen iPhone hardware and software and use the “cloud”(otherwise known as “servers”) to store users content, instead of the usual internal hard drive. Lastly, this new device is reportedly going to sell for a mere $99.
The new architecture of the device will be based directly on the iPhone 4, meaning it will get the same internals, down to that A4 CPU and a limited amount of flash storage — 16GB to be exact — though it will be capable of full 1080p HD (!). The device is said to be quite small with a scarce amount of ports (only the power socket and video out), and has been described to some as “an iPhone without a screen.” Are you ready for the real shocker? According to our sources, the price-point for the device will be $99.
The focus of the device will be streaming, but if users so choose, they can sync their AppleTVs with their Time Capsule for local Wi-Fi based storage. The report also notes, and I tend to agree, that this device will not be mentioned at Apple’s upcoming World Wide Developers Conference.
I suspect we see this device in the fall with Apple’s music event, not during a developers conference.
