I think the vehicle levels have the most potential to differentiate this title from the rest.

However, tying the beat and tempo of the music to the pace of the game is really never going to work. As you found, the jerkiness of this play mechanic only served to ruin what is otherwise a fresh take on the genre. Tying in music to gameplay has been successfully implemented in the past (Rez, et al) and it wouldn't hurt if the dev's implemented some of the more successful mechanics.
