In an attempt to prove that all of their platforms are far more open than critics claim, Apple has posted a HTML5 demo page.
As John Gruber of Daring Fireball pointed out, the App Store is a closed method of getting applications on Apple’s iPhone OS devices. However, all versions of Safari, across all of Apple’s platforms is based on WebKit, a standards based web browser engine.
Apple cannot stop what users look at with Safari, and thus the platform is free to be developed on by anyone. With the advent of HTML5, more can now be done with webpages on remote servers, and in some cases outright replace installed applications on a users device. Look no further than Google Docs (I believe it’s HTML5 based).
