The WWDC 2010 Keynote has just ended, here’s what was announced.
iPhone 4
The new iPhone we’ve heard so much about in recent months is finally here.
-New “Retina” display with a resolution of 960×640 or an astounding 320ppi. The human eye can only perceive 300ppi.
–Multitasking
More or less the same stuff we heard back in April at the iPhone OS 4 event. Multitasking allows users to rapidly switch between apps without sacrificing performance.
Camera
-New camera that captures footage at 720p at 30fps, which is of course HD resolution. Still photos are captured at 5MP (I think), and has a LED flash built in.
-You can now purchase a version of iMovie for iPhone, so you can edit your footage right on your phone. It will cost $4.99.
FaceTime
-The new iPhone 4 has a video calling feature called “FaceTime.” It is currently WiFi only, but is expected to be available on carriers sometime in the future. This feature only works between two iPhone 4s and requires no setup.
-iBooks
The iBookstore is coming to iPhone. Buy a book once and it downloadable for free from any of your iOS 4 devices. Wireless syncing of bookmarks and the new notes feature is also included. PDFs are now fully supported in iBooks.
The new iPhone comes in white and black, and 16GB for $199, and 32GB for $299. The device will be released in the U.S., France, Germany, UK, and Japan on June 24th. Another 18 countries are slated for a July release.
The iPhone 3GS has taken the 3G’s low-end spot for $99. Pre-orders will start June 15th.
The new iPhone also has a gyroscope for added precision. The device also utilizes Apple’s custom A4 chip, the same one found in the iPad. It also has dual mics for noise suppression.
iPhone OS 4/ iOS 4
-iPhone OS has been renamed “iOS.” Not too much new information was released today. Developers will be getting the Gold Master seed sometime today, and the software update will be available on June 21st for iPhone and iPod touch users, for free. No more charging iPod touch owners. That said, first generation iPod touches and iPhones cannot run this new software, and the iPhone 3G can’t run all of the features.
Other news
-iPad will be in 19 countries by the end of the year. There are currently 8,500 native iPad apps in the store, and 35million have been downloaded to date.
-The iBookstore has already captured 22% of eBooks sales, while 5 million iBooks have been downloaded in the first 65 days.
-Steve Jobs defends the App Store while touting open standards. 95% of App Store submissions are approved within 7 days.
-iPhone currently has 28% of US Smartphone market share.
One hell of a show. This is going to be huge.
