Head to Head: Rock Band or Guitar Hero?

Having fielded many, many questions about the differences between Rock Band and Guitar Hero (review) at my old position at Best Buy, I thought I ‘d throw a quick piece out to point out what ‘s unique about each title.

Music

From what I can tell, Guitar Hero content tends to stay more in the Rock genre, whereas Rock Band music can really go all over the place.

Both games feature similar and entertaining game modes, although Guitar Hero really is just a lead guitar or bass lines to play through alone, whereas Rock Band features four ‘instruments ‘.

In terms of pricing, Guitar Hero makes for a very easy trial purchase at six songs for $3 (with song previews in the Music Store), as opposed to Rock Band ‘s 15 songs for $7. However, if you are out to get as much content as you can, then Guitar Hero is definitely the more expensive of the two titles, with three songs available for $2, as opposed to Rock Band ‘s two for $1 packages.

Single Player

There is no campaign mode to speak of in Guitar Hero, though playing each song will earn you ranks and little cosmetic unlocks for your in-game avatar. Rock Band does features a full campaign mode, although it isn ‘t very involved (it ‘s just tiered increase in difficulty), and you can still play any song in quick play at any time.

Local Multiplayer

Guitar Hero has no multiplayer to speak of so far, which is something Rock Band supported right out the door. This is likely going to be a big deciding factor for buyers, since App Store games can be legally played on multiple devices, as long as you use the same account. Spending $7 to play through all 15 songs with three friends is a pretty damn good deal.

Simply put: if you ‘re looking for an easy way to try out the iPhone version of one of the biggest gaming titles in the last few years, Guitar Hero ‘s accessible asking price definitely makes it the music app to get first. However, if co-op multiplayer is your prerogative, then the only choice for now is to look to Rock Band and it ‘s heavier $7 starting price.
