iPhone Jailbreaking/Unlocking NOT illegal!

All of you jailbreakers and cell phone enthusiasts out there can sleep a little easier tonight. Although the words “jailbreak” and “illegal” used in the same context may seem more than absurd to most. Apple at one point apparently felt otherwise.

Fortunately consumers have the upper hand in this round! Paying customers will now have the legal green light to jailbreak their iPhones and hack other cellular devices to break controls tying them to a particular carrier. From ABCnews:

The new government rules, however, won’t stop Apple from continuing its practice of disabling jailbroken phones with software upgrades. That means owners of such phones might not be able to take advantage of software improvements, and they still run the risk of voiding their warranty. All the new rules do is exempt the user from legal liability …

Meaning the exploits the Dev Team uses to provide jailbreaks will continue to be patched by Apple’s software updates thus continuing the familiar game of cat and mouse .

Creative support admins will also rejoice at the news that they will now be allowed to legally circumvent those pesky USB DRM “dongles” in the event the dongle becomes a dud.

In addition to these exemptions, DVD ripping for educational use is now something you won’t be doing 10-20 for up the river, as well as allowing researchers to break technical protections on video games for educational security purposes.

Oh where a decade of DRM has brought us and wouldn’t this be a great time to thank the folks at the EFF?
