Apple Releases iOS 4.1 beta 3 to Developers

Apple today released iOS 4.1 beta 3 to developers. According to Apple’s release notes, most of the changes in this release are fixes for bugs reported in previous beta versions, but it’s clear the large majority of updates were focused on the upcoming Game Center.

Game Center has been called Xbox Live for the iPhone and is slated for release this Fall. Based on the release notes, it appears that Game Center is closer to launch. Developers are now required to use the latest version of Game Center, and they no longer have access to the players’ status. Unfortunately, according to the release notes for beta 3, Game Center is no longer supported on the iPhone 3G or the 2nd generation iPhone.

As a beta release, iOS 4.1 beta 3 is only available to developers. Apple has not given a general release date for the public version of iOS 4.1.
