Game Center No Longer Coming to iPhone 3G and 2nd Gen iPod Touch

One of the biggest changes accompanying the iOS 4.1 Beta 3 release given to developers the other day, is the lack of Game Center support for the iPhone 3G and 2nd Generation iPod touch.

Game Center, is as you may know, Apple’s forthcoming social gaming network for iOS devices, where game developers can link into the centralized service offering high score leaderboards and achievements.

No explaination was given for why Apple dropped support for the older devices, but now, the service will only funtion on iPhone 3GS, 3rd-Gen iPod touch, and likely the iPad.

My guess? RAM. I suspect, and I’m talking without developer knowledge, that Game Central can operate in the background. If this is the case, the earlier iOS devices don’t have the extra RAM needed to keep the system running smoothly if Game Center decides to use a little.
