Review: You Gotta See This! v1.0.1 for iPhone

See This!

‘A Photography app that would take full advantage of the iPhone 4 ‘s Gyroscope ‘ “ This was enough to grab my attention.

Every once in a while I come across some iPhone App related hubbub that steals my attention, especially ones that have been intentionally started by the Developers of said apps – In a clever marketing campaign weeks before it was even due for submission, ‘You Gotta See This! ‘ from Boinx Software was one of those that created a rave especially on Twitter where the Devs continuously teased and dropped hints about their latest addition to their ever growing product list. This was a first for them on this platform, the iPhone 4.

Ever been at a concert and wished your friends could experience the atmosphere with you? Ever been on a mountain top and wished your family could experience the same view? Ever thought “they’ve got to see this!” but simply taking a picture was not enough? Share your experiences with unique images taken in a unique way with your iPhone 4 and “You Gotta See This!”

See This! (as the app is labelled once installed) utilises the iPhone 4 ‘s Gyroscope to determine the cameras orientation to record scenes assembled in a collage form or panoramic nature, without the need for continuous tapping of the shoot button on the camera app.

Upon launching the app, you wont miss the very easy, clean User Interface that consist of three buttons at the bottom part of the screen:

  • A ‘? ‘ icon, when tapped takes you to the getting started guide.
  • The camera icon to start and stop the scene taking process.
  • A gear icon as your settings, options to have the flash on/off, Auto Focus & Exposure, and toggle for front or back camera.

Once you’re familiar with how it works from the getting started guide, simply hold the iPhone as described in the tutorial for best results, tap the camera icon to start the scene snapping process, it functions almost like the burst mode found on most DSLR cameras. By slowly moving your arm whilst your body is in a fixed state, you can rotate the device freely while recording your scene, swipe the scene up, down, left and right with the camera. The sensitivity of the Gyro also allows for diagonal movement, creating more angles from your scene.

The border around the camera preview tints yellow and then red if you move your iPhone too fast, so sweeping your iPhone  slowly yields better results when it assembles the photos. When you’re done shooting the scene, it assembles the photos into the 6 different collage themes the app offers.

That’s not where it stops, the whole point of it all is to be able share the experience, you can choose to save your finished product to your camera roll, share it on Twitter, Facebook, or by Email.

With all the anticipation, I was somehow a bit disappointed by some of the final results due to the way the various themes handle the collage, I would’ve loved to be able ‘select ‘ individual shots on certain collages. I really like the idea of moving the iPhone around to capture ‘panoramic ‘ scenes instead of continuous tapping.

Maybe better themes in future versions that handle the final product well will justify the asking price for this app – but the clever use of the gyro, colourful interface, is not enough for me to make use of this app on a regular basis, am quite happy using the native camera and AutoStitch to capture panoramic scenes.

Overall, See This!, is definitely a fun new creative way to taking photos, but more refinements on the final product is needed. This tutorial video can perhaps help in your decision making whether this is worthy of a place amongst your Top photo apps on your iPhone.

You Gotta See This! is available now in the iTunes app store for 1.19/$1.99
