Next iPod Touch to be Equipped with Retina Display and Two Cameras?

While commenting on the news of Dell’s Streak 5-inch Tablet device announcement, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber suggests that the next iPod touch will be equipped with two cameras and the same Retina display as seen on the iPhone 4.

That’s almost twice as much as a good iPod Touch, and if you wait a few weeks to buy the Touch, you’ll get one with a Retina Display and dual cameras. If Dell can’t make an iPod Touch competitor, who can?

Over the last year there have been many reports hinting that the next iPod touch will be equipped with at least one camera. Shortly after last year’s(the current model) iPod touch was released, several prototypes surfaced equipped with a rear-facing camera.

As of late however, there have been a number of reports that suggest the next iPod touch will have a front-facing camera capable of making FaceTime calls similar to that the iPhone 4 offers.

The only catch however, is that the current iPod touch design can’t fit both cameras. The iPhone 4 uses a 5-megapixel rear camera, which the iPod touch’s current design, cannot accommodate for. Even the iPhone 3GS’s 3.2 megapixel camera appears to be too think to fit. This suggests that the new iPod touch will be redesigned, or one of the cameras will not be included.

That said, John Gruber is almost always right. If he has any doubt he won’t publish it. That means the iPod touch will likely have both cameras and I’m guessing a new case design to accommodate them.

Gruber even states that the new iPod touch will be released in “a few weeks”, which would fall in line with Apple’s traditional early to mid September iPod refresh schedule. However, we have heard reports that the iPod even might be scheduled as early as next week, although Apple has yet to send out invites to the media.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. I’ll eat my hat if the next iPod touch does not have a FaceTime camera. I don’t know about a rear facing one, but it too seems like a fairly likely inclusion.
