Overexposure: Camera+ pulled from the App Store

Posted on 12 Aug 2010 by Thomas

yes, yes, I recycled this image from my last post...

[Clarification: I may not have been as clear as I would have liked to be, but my opinion on the matter is that the VolumeSnap tweak may have been leaked without developer consent, since the circumstances do seem a little mysterious.]

[Update 2: added bit of info from 148 Apps article.]

Ah, crap crap crap. As you may have read on other sites (or on “the Twitter”, as Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson likes to call it), there is a back door command to activate the VolumeSnap feature for tap tap tap’s Camera+ app. Developer tap tap tap tried to convince Apple to approve the feature in an official update, but it was rejected…twice. VolumeSnap is what allowed photographer Lisa Bettany to click the shutter by using the volume buttons in this video, and it’s the sorta-sneaky inclusion of this very feature that has gotten the app pulled from the App Store.

If you already have Camera+ installed, you can simply type “ camplus://enablevolumesnap” into the Safari URL bar to enable VolumeSnap. There is also a command to disable the tweak, but the most sure-fire way seems to simply be to re-install Camera+ if you don’t like the change.

The tweak has been floating around for about two days now, and the original source has been a mystery to me. I originally thought it came from Twitter user @ChrisHerbert1, but an article on 148Apps claims that the tip originally came tap tap tap’s own Twitter account. Unfortunately, the tweet seems to have been deleted.

tap tap tap did post on their blog about the great second month’s sales for Camera+, but didn’t mention anything about including the back door feature. This would be a logical move if they did, in fact, leak the feature, but why would they take the risk?

It’s not as though I don’t believe that tap tap tap is beyond trying to sneak a feature in, but it seems more than a little silly to risk an App Store ban when Camera+ has been selling so very well.

Anything Lisa Bettany is involved in is usually sneaky, so this does not surprise me. There are other apps out there just as good as Camera+, and they came from developers who followed the rules. I only wish Lisa Bettany would give me my $2.99 back.
