PingChat! for iPhone needs an ad-free version

Posted on 03 Sep 2010 by Thomas

Yesterday I loaded up the newest version of PingChat!, messaged a friend (I have one of those now!), and then noticed an ad running along the bottom of the screen. I found this strange, since I distinctly remember PingChat! being an ad-free experience when I downloaded a few months ago.

“That’s okay,” I thought, “I’ll just see how much the pro or premium version costs, because PingChat! still looks better than WhatsApp.” But after checking all of the app’s settings pages, I’ve found nothing. There simply doesn’t seem to be any way to get rid of these ads.

I think it’s a missed opportunity for the developer to have implemented an in-app purchase or a premium version of the app (and I’m not alone in thinking this either). I understand that money doesn’t grow on trees and that free apps may require ad revenue to stay alive, but introducing ads seemingly out of the blue isn’t the right way to go about it.

I’ll keep PingChat! around for a while in the hopes that the devs address this with some kind of update, but otherwise I’ll be sticking to WhatsApp as my main iPhone-to-iPhone messenger.

I agree, not sure if you remember but PingChat! used to be 99 cent. I am one of the ones that payed for the app, and now the 99 cent version doesn't get updated and is not optimized for the iPhone 4, so I'm suck using the ad supported version.
