bjango on the possibility of a one-window iChat for Mac

iChat - so many bloody windows!

Every time somebody pipes up about iChat I end up wanting to try it out (again), but then I do, and I end up feeling disappointed with the it (again). Something about iChat just seems so messy and inefficient, especially when compared to many of the other gorgeous default Mac applications, but bjango’s latest little “what if…” piece may have found a cool little alternative. It’s really quite a simple proposition (“what if iChat was one window?“), but the mockups look so darn good I wish they were real.

The piece is pretty short and most of the space is taken up by very pretty pictures, but the last sentence of the article struck me: “I’m finding more and more that the best way to design desktop apps is to imagine you’re building them for iOS.

I’m not sure I agree with it entirely, but it is an interesting point of view. It seems to me to be a reverse of the Windows Mobile design philosophy, which mostly felt like “let’s shrink the desktop UI until it fits onto this really small screen”.
