Apple's North Carolina Data Center Nearly Ready for Operation, Paid $1.7 million for 1-Acre Lot

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has paid a couple living near the company’s massive new data center in Maiden, North Carolina, $1.7 million for their 1-acre plot. The house and plot Apple bought was worth $181,700 according to local tax records.

Apple Inc. needed land owned by Donnie and Kathy Fulbright for a $1 billion data center in rural North Carolina. The couple showed no interest in moving out of their home of 34 years in the town of Maiden.

The Fulbrights say they spurned one offer, then a second. Finally, they agreed to sell for $1.7 million, county records show, opting to leave the single-story house on the less than one acre of land they purchased for $6,000.

The couple has since used the money to buy a 4,200-square-foot house on 49-acres of property.

Apple also seems to be hiring for nine position related to the data center, primarily for weekend positions. As we’ve reported, Apple has also hired others over the last year, accumulating staff well before the data center goes live sometime later this year.
