MacBook Air 11.6 & 13.3 Inch Models Available Now

Steve Jobs ended Apple’s ‘Back to the Mac’ conference today with his famous “one more thing” line. Just as expected, this time the announcement was for a new MacBook Air. But not just one!

As well as an updated 13.3-inch model, Steve surprised us all with the release of a brand new 11.6-inch model. Although a smaller device was rumored, with Steve’s views on Netbooks and mini laptop devices, I honestly didn’t think we’d actually see one.

During the keynote, Steve explained that Apple’s aim was to take some the advantages users have become accustom to in the iPad and “bring them back to the Mac.” That’s why the new MacBook Airs boast an instant-on feature, awesome battery life, solid state flash storage, and a tiny form factor.

The new MacBook Airs look stunning. Both boast a complete aluminum unibody design, which is just 0.68 inches at its thickest point, and an amazing 0.11 inches thick at its thinnest. Overall, the new machine is 90% smaller and lighter than its predecessor, with completely silent operation.

The display in the 11.6-inch model has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels – that’s more than in the current 13″ MacBook Pro. While the 13.3-inch model MBA has a resolution of 1440×900 pixels, and that’s more than in the current 15″ MacBook Pro.

Unlike the poor battery performance you’ll get from the previous MacBook Air, the new devices claim to offer up to 5 hours web browsing from the 11-6″ model, and up to 7 hours from its bigger brother. Both claim to have an outstanding 30 days standby power.

There are two USB 2.0 ports in the latest models, and the 13″ will also get you an SD card slot. Both also include some of the basic features you’d expect to see from an Apple notebook, like a Mini DisplayPort, stereo speakers, and a FaceTime camera.

While the new MacBook Airs feature the NVIDIA 320M graphics chip, they still only feature Intel’s ageing Core2Duo processors. Many were hoping to see the latest Core i3 processor make its way in to Apple’s latest ultra-mobile notebooks.

So what about price? Well, if you want the 11″ model with 64GB of flash storage, you’re looking at $999 – the same price as the current white MacBook. If 64GB of storage isn’t enough and you’d prefer 128GB, you’ll need to stump up $1,199. For the 13″, it’s $1,299 for the 64GB model and $1,599 for the 128GB model. All four models include 2GB of RAM which can be upgraded for around $100.

So that’s our roundup of the main features of Apple’s new MacBook Air. We’d like to know what you think of the devices, and whether you’ll be buying one! Please let us know in the comments!
