Well, It took a little longer than I had planned, but the final product was stellar! As you’ll see the video is almost to the 10 minute mark just for the top! Truth be told you can plan on spending (unless you’re an expert) at least 20-30 minutes total putting a full BodyGuardz onto your MacBook. It really isn’t because the product is hard to install, it’s more of making sure that the install is really good and you aren’t going to have sections hanging off or peeling up later. I think you’ll find if you put in the effort, take your time and practice patience you end up with a great cover for the Air and the worries about accidentally scratching it will quickly fade away.
If you’ve read one of my BodyGuardz reviews before I’m sure you know I drone on and on about how I prefer my phone to be “naked” or otherwise unprotected by a typical case. That’s not to say I walk around with my phone completely unprotected. I actually think my iP4 is just as protected, if not more so than a lot of other phones that are in a case. Sure I don’t have drop protection – but unless you’re using a top quality case with a lot of padding on the inside chances are you don’t have a lot of drop protection either. So the typical case is really not much more than scratch protection, and my iP4 is darned near scratch proof.

What you get in package - a top and bottom piece, as well a 4 pieces for the inside (palm rest, keyboard sides and trackpad), 2 spray bottles as well as a layout sheet
But why do you need it on a laptop? Seems pretty silly doesn’t it? Well not when you really think about. Sure the Air is made of aluminum so its tougher to scratch than the shiny top of a color Dell, and chances are pretty good you’re going to gently place your Air into a well protected laptop bag. You’ll baby the heck out of it for the first little while just like anything new. But over time we get complacent with our belongings. The newness wears off, maybe it crashes a couple times, you realize flash sucks and while the love affair doesn’t die completely you fall into a mode where you just don’t pay as much attention to protecting the Air as you should. That one time you’ve got something in your bag (like say an external hard drive with metal screws on the bottom) and you slide your Air into it leaving a huge scratch along the top… that’s when the BodyGuardz earns its pay. You don’t put something like the BodyGuardz on your laptop because you intend to treat it like crap … you put it on there because our minds are always in 50 places at once. You put it on there because its only a matter of time before you make a mistake and toss your keys on the lid, or have something on the desk and set your Air on top of it and scratch the bottom. So in a way the BodyGuardz is more of protecting our devices from ourselves.
Need to justify the $49.95 it costs for a full body skin? Resale value. In a couple years when you’re ready to upgrade and you’re trying to redeem some cash – who do you think is going to get more for their MacBook Air? The guy who didn’t use a BodyGuardz and has to explain all the nasty gouges all over it … or you who can say there’s not a scratch on it? Long story short – if you love your laptop now take the time to put on a BodyGuardz. When you fall out of the passionate phase later you won’t end up breaking your own heart as you hear that horrible scratching sound or have to drop the resale value because its got marks all over it and you can’t figure out why.
Oh, and there’s one other benefit from putting on the full skin BodyGuardz. Drop protection. Yes, you read that right. No, I’m not telling you that by simply applying the BodyGuardz to your MacBook Air its now military drop tested and safe from repeated drops from the roof. I’m talking about grip. The Air is a slippery little bugger. The BodyGuardz gives it a nice grippy surface that won’t slide under your fingertips like a smooth aluminum surface will. If your friends have ever nicknamed you butterfingers…

The details make the difference and the BodyGuardz skin was designed beautifully. All the screws are exposed for easy maintenance should you ever need to crack it open.

Cost: $16.95 – $49.95
Disclaimer: BodyGuardz supplied me with the review product. But, I’ve given BodyGuardz a heck of a lot of money over the past couple years as I’ve purchased skins for the 1st gen, 3G, 3Gs and yes even for the iPhone 4. I’m a believer in the product plain and simple.
