AirPlay No Longer Coming to iPhone 3G

9to5Mac is reporting that the iOS 4.2 Gold Master build is lacking AirPlay support for iPhone 3G. Oddly, the earlier builds of iOS 4.2 offered AirPlay support on the iPhone 3G, but it seems that Apple removed it for unknown reasons shortly before the final release.

After speaking to multiple developers and users testing out the iOS 4.2 betas, we have determined that AirPlay did in fact work on the iPhone 3G at one point, meaning the AirPlay functionality was definitely removed from Apple’s two-year-old iPhone at its GM stage.

The make the situation even more strange, Apple’s Apple TV product page still states that AirPlay is still coming to “all iOS 4 devices”, even though no signs of it remain in the Gold Master.

Of course, it’s worth remembering that the iPhone 3G has seen several features promised for the device, later cut by Apple, usually due to performance issues. Features like Game Center, being the most prominent example.
