Orange Austria gears up with iPhone 4 for the holiday season

Orange and the iPhone 4 made news again in Austria last week. First, they announced that they had sold 200,000 iPhone 4 units since it went on sale on 30 July 2010. Second, Orange is offering the iPhone 4 from € 1 in combination with a 2-year contract. No strings attached.

Austria is a country of just 8 million people. If Orange has sold (and presumably activated) 200,000 units (matching the number sold by T-mobile) this means that 5% of the country’s population are iPhone 4 users. Compared to the US population, this would be approx 15 million iPhone 4 units sold for the US alone. Apple has confirmed 14 million iPhones sold in Q4 worldwide.

And remember this happened in 3 months, during which the iPhone 4 was seriously out of stock until more than 4 weeks after launch date (not to mention despite Antennagate and Glassgate). They managed to find and bind 200,000 new and existing customers to their services for another 2 years. No wonder prospective iPhone service providers Drei and A1 are scrambling over each other, waiting impatiently until they can jump on the iPhone bandwagon later this month (if the rumours are true).

Orange has set out some pretty competitive prices. An iPhone 4 for an Euro is a good deal. If you choose the “Hallo iPhone“ tarif you get 1 month free service, 2100 minutes of phone time, 2100 text messages and 6 GB data plan – for €39 a month.

T-mobile has yet to match this offer but if they do and the others follow suit, those who may still be on the fence will have definitively run out of excuses to get an iPhone 4. Orange hopes that their offer won’t be beat, leading to raining iPhone 4s this holiday season!
