My apologies for this later-than-usual news bit, but the folks over at BGR.com reported a few weeks back about the smartphone market share within the U.S., referencing three different reports from Nielsen, NPD Group, Canalys. Perhaps the most interesting tidbit from Nielsen is that smartphones account for just 28 percent of the cell phone market share in the States.
Think about that number for a second. Almost three-quarters of the cell phones in this country are non-smartphones. The report also states, however, that over 40 percent of cell phones purchased over the past six months were smartphones, so that 28 percent figure is sure to rise in due time.
When it comes to market share, the three firms differ. NPD and Canalys both show Android in the lead with 44 percent of the market, with iOS and the BlackBerry OS a close second and third. Nielsen, however, shows RIM in the top spot with a 30 percent share.
Among all three reports, Apple’s market share percentage ranges from 23%-28%. So, basically, Apple owns a quarter of a cell phone segment that makes up only a quarter of all cell phones. Despite all of the well-deserved praise Apple has received for how much it has changed and affected the cell phone market, the potential for growth is enormous.
Only the most naive out there would think Apple does not know this. Who knows what they might have planned to take the success of the iPhone to the next level. And, even more, who knows what the next level even is?
