The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) has an interesting little image that shows how gigantic the iOS games market has become. The original version of this graph only showed the gaming consoles along the bottom and compared them to most every title in the gaming category, but this updated graph (by Richard Gaywood) gives a better and more relevant picture of how far iOS has come as a gaming platform.
Games on modern consoles can take years and millions of dollars to make and end up retailing for around $60.00, whereas iOS games are usually developed in less than a year and usually cost less than $7.00 a pop. Comparing iOS to Flash games on Newgrounds.com is really a much more realistic comparison, since the majority of games on these two platforms are in the “casual” genre (Bejeweled, anyone?). However, even there, it’s easy to see how far Apple’s platform has come in two years, compared to the amount of “Newground” covered by Flash games on Newgrounds.com in the past 15 years.
You can check out the full post at TUAW — it’s a heck of a lot more thorough than my 100 word mini analysis.
