Two ‘Jailbreak’ Apps for Apple TV Coming Soon: Web Browser and Last.fm

FireCore – makers of a jailbreak-style ‘flash’ for the Apple TV called aTV Flash – have unveiled demos on a couple of apps that are nearly ready for beta release. They are a web browser called Couch Surfer and a Last.fm app. There’s a video demo for each of them, and their beta releases are expected within the next 1-2 weeks.

I hardly ever use Last.fm anymore, so I didn’t watch that demo but I did look at the Couch Surfer browser video embedded above. Honestly I just can’t think of when I’d ever need or want this ability on my TV, especially when you need to use the painful on-screen text entry method of the Apple TV. It’s OK for initial setup and connecting to iTunes, but certainly not a place I want to visit any more often than I have to.

For now, I’m not tempted to hack my Apple TV at all – but I’ll continue to watch what’s coming with the flash / jailbreak scene, as well as what comes ‘stock’ once iOS 4.2 is released and Apple TV hopefully gets an update to go along with it.

How about you all?  Are you keen to run a web browser or Last.fm on your Apple TV? Keen to start hacking it?
