Toktumi, the company the developed Line2, a popular VoIP application for iOS devices, has sent an email to their customers warning them of a bug in iOS 4.2. This bug causes the ringer to continue to ring even after the call has been answered with Line2 running in the background. Toktumi, also reports that Apple is aware of the bug and has labeled it “severe”.
Here’s an excerpt from Toktumi’s email:
Attention all Line2 iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users:
Please do not upgrade to iOS version 4.2.
If you upgrade to iOS 4.2 and you are running Line2 in the background, the ringer will continue to ring even after an incoming call is answered. This affects Line2 as well as all other VoIP and social calling apps. (Note: If you do not use Line2 your Toktumi service will not be effected.)
Apple Developer Support is aware of this issue and has designated its status as ‘severe’. However, as of the most recent iOS beta (GMSeed build), this issue is still not resolved. We apologize for this inconvenience and will update you as soon as we get more information from Apple.
Line2 will continue to work as normal with your current operating system. We strongly encourage you not to install iOS 4.2 until Apple fixes the upgrade issue. We will send out an email update as soon as it is safe to upgrade.
Sincerely,
The Toktumi/Line2 Team
The back story to this, or even why this matters outside the realm of a bug announcement, is because Apple released the Gold Master of iOS 4.2 to developers way back on November 1st. There were reports that the release of iOS 4.2 was delayed due to Wi-Fi connectivity problems, and Apple pushed out a new Gold Master release last week.
With all of that said, Apple has pushed out yet another Gold Master build labeled iOS 4.2.1 to developers. There is currently no word on if this release addresses the VoIP bug described above, or if this addresses other problems that have been found.
I short, Apple is running out of time to hit their November release timeframe they set for the release of iOS 4.2. Of course the reason this release is a big deal, is because it finally brings iOS 4 to the iPad, something iPad users have had to live without since iOS 4 was released on the iPhone in the summer.
