OK, a very basic tip indeed here – but just in case any of you are new to Apple TV (like I am) and aren’t quite sure how you get an update for the device. You’re going to want to know how to get updates, because they will enable some nice new features for your Apple TV. Yesterday there was an update to go along with the iOS 4.2 release for iPads and iPhones. This update provides support for AirPlay – which allows you to stream photos, audio, and video from your iDevices to your TV screen via Apple TV.
So here’s how you get an Apple TV update. Use your Apple TV remote to go to the main menu, scroll over to the right and choose the Settings menu item. Then scroll down to General and select it. Then scroll down to ‘Update Software’ and select it.
That’s it – on-screen prompts will take care of the rest – and they’ll mainly just be reminders to keep Apple TV plugged in while it updates. This first update for Apple TV should take just a few minutes to install. Once it’s installed, the new AirPlay feature will be on by default.
