Digitimes has found a Chinese report from the Economy Daily News which states that the next-generation iPad will have five new features. These features being: “video phone, better mobility, USB port, new display technology and 3-axis gyroscopes.”
The report of a “video phone”, or as we now know it, a FaceTime camera, shouldn’t be a surprise, as Apple has pushed to outfit all of their iOS devices with them in the past year. Nor should the notion of a 3-axis gyroscope or a thinner/lighter form-factor. However, the notion of a USB port on the new iPad as a shock.
Yes, we’ve heard reports of the new iPad having a USB port before, but it didn’t make sense then and it doesn’t make sense now. Apple, throughout the history of their ultra-mobile devices (iPod/iPhone/iPad) has used the 30-pin connector, and their I/O of choice. In fact, to my knowledge, it was only the first generation iPod in 2001 that didn’t have a 30-pin connector. Instead it had a FireWire port.
In short, this report nails it, but the USB port is a little iffy, but not an overly unreasonable expectation, especially if Apple is trying to market the iPad as an computer replacement.
