 Picks of the Week

Today at iSource we are introducing a new weekly series called Picks of the Week.  Each week our writers will showcase some of our favorite Apple products to share with you, our readers. These will be a selection of some of our favorite things, and hopefully many of them will be items that will also be of interest to you.  This week we decided to kick-off our new series with just apps, since app reviews have traditionally been a bread and butter type staple for us.  Please feel free to comment on our selections, and suggest picks of your own.  Check out this week’s picks after the break

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner (v1.0)

Picked by: jhrogersii

 Star Wars

I started looking over this app today for review (coming soon), and it easily makes my Pick of the Week. I love apps that push the envelop and take advantage of hardware in unique ways. Falcon Gunner gets high marks on both counts. The standard Star Wars backdrops are nice and all, but the Augmented Reality mode, which literally brings the action to you, is the star of the show. I had a great time blasting TIE Fighters, TIE Bombers, and asteroids all over my hotel room this evening, and I will definitely be coming back for more. Between the AR Mode, lots of familiar Star Wars backdrops, great audio and video clips from the original trilogy, weapons and ability upgrades (which can be earned or purchased), and GameCenter support, Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner is a fun and interactive experience for any iOS gamer, whether you are a fan of the movies, or just interested in trying something a little different.

FX Photo Studio HD (v1.2)

Picked by: PatrickJ

FX Photo

Photo effects / editing app. There’s an iPhone version as well but I came across the iPad one first. There are a ton of these apps in the App Store, but this one has over 100 effects, a lot of which are really stunning and easy to work with, as well as some decent basic editing tools. I’ve used quite a few of these apps but this one is an instant favorite.

BeatBurn Treadmill/Outdoor Trainer (v2.0) formerly lolo Burn

Picked by: Jay

beatburn

This was already a great motivational app to help me continue my health-kick of running. I did my first 5K Race two weeks ago (in 27 mins), and have been exercising regularly – in large part to the app, lolo Burn (review) – even before the recent update and name change. After updating two weeks ago, newly named BeatBurn has added the technology of tempo shifting music from my personal iPod playlist (from their other app Tempo Magic) and now the app is killer. Imagine running to your favorite music in which the tempo has been increased to push and match the pace at which you should be exercising, all while getting the benefit of a trainer’s voice as a coach. I now weigh less than I have in several years, feel healthier and better, and run 5K two or three times a week. I believe BeatBurn has been a major contributor to my success!

COD Zombies (v1.5)

Picked by: Thomas

Pastebot_2010-11-30_23.54.29_PM

COD Zombies is definitely my pick of the week, since it features zombies, great coop multiplayer, and the uncanny ability to make me stop doing my homework. I’ve stated that I think COD Zombies has the best FPS control scheme I’ve ever seen in an iPhone game, but I’ve also been quite impressed with all the extra detail. Shotguns have individual shells in reload animations, and you can actually shoot both arms or both legs off of incoming nazi zombies, if you’re fast enough. It’s also absolutely terrifying to play by yourself —
At $4.99 for four maps and wi-fi (local or over das Internet) multiplayer, this game is an absolute steal and represents some of the best gaming that can be had on iOS.

GPS Tuner (v1.0.3)

Picked by: Renkman

GPS Tuner

GPS Tuner is a comprehensive off-road GPS planning application that uses route planning technology specifically designed for the iPhone.  You can plan routes online, and then display them offline in the field, or even free-hand a manual route! There are 40, yes you read right—40 selectable trip computer tools with multiple layout options.  You can compare tracks, analyze the data, and even visualize the data on charts.  There is a feature called Smart Route off road planning that will actually direct you around rough terrain, finding the easiest route to take.  Share your waypoints directly to facebook.  Tweet your GPS coordinates.  Email files with track locations and pictures tagged and displayed in selected maps or aerial images.  There are even pre-stored email messages that tag you coordinates and the nature of your emergency built right in.  This navigation app has it all.  Compatible with iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 or later.
