Official Google Reader App for Android Launched, iPhone Coming Soon?

Google has released an official Google Reader app for Android this week. It supports unread counts, friends, sharing, liking and starring, multiple accounts, synced preferences, full subscription features (subscribe and search from the phone), and search.

The Google Reader Blog, in their release announcement post, notes a few other harder to discover features:

  • Volume-key navigation: if you enable this in the settings, you can navigate by using your phone’s volume keys for next and previous
  • Long-press on a folder or subscription to bring up a contextual menu that lets you rename, unsubscribe or change folders
  • If you hit the menu key on an individual item, you can use the “send” feature which integrates with other apps on your phone to send the item using any 3rd party app

I don’t have an Android device (shocker eh?) but I am hopeful that if Google sticks to their past approach on apps it may not be too long before we see a native Google Reader app for iOS. Now that would make things awfully interesting. There are a number of good reader apps for iOS but Greader as a web app has always compared quite well with them. I know I’d be very keen to try out a native version if / when it hits the App Store.
