Pastebot is one of my favorite utility apps for my iPhone and iPad. It has been for a long while, and I use it just about every day. Lately though, it annoys the hell out of me on a pretty regular basis.
The reason it bugs me so much is that it has, or has claimed to have, support for working with multiple iOS devices for a long while now. So, you are supposed to be able to happily have, for example, both an iPad and iPhone as registered sync partners – and be able to quickly copy the clipboard from either of those devices to a Mac. Things is, this just doesn’t work most of the time for me.
It’s not that it has never, ever worked. It has, and it does at times. And Pastebot happily shows me all of the time that I have two registered devices, just as desired, In practice though, the once-super-clever and now often painfully stupid app ‘forgets’ that one or both devices are sync partners on a very frequent basis.
What happens almost all the time is that if one is working, the other isn’t. So when I look for the familiar ‘Paste to Mac’ command it is just not there. When I look in Settings > Sync, it shows it is partnered with my MacBook, but it clearly isn’t working – and it does not work until I remove the sync partner and re-add it. Doing this once in a great while would not be a big deal, but right now I almost invariably find that as soon as I do this on the iPad, it breaks the sync partnership on the iPhone – and vice-versa.
So yeah, basically Pastebot sucks at supporting my two devices. And because it does, it has gone from being a favorite utility to one that just as often as not inspires great frustration. I even find myself bypassing it completely now and just using Dropbox / DropImage to move image files to my Mac, rather than having to go through a song and dance with Pastebot of I want to copy images from the ‘forgotten’ device.
Am I the only one having these less-than-joyful experiences with Pastebot? Does it handle multiple devices just fine for you all?
