The Tenutos pop-ups by MrEikichi
If you’re fine with the iPhone’s default pop-ups mechanics, but simply want a different look, then you might want to check out MrEikichi’s Tenutos Winterboard theme (and Tenuitas by iAndrew — which it was designed to match). Both of these themes are standard definition, but there is a more advanced HD version of Tenutos which was modded by Devout, available here.
These frosty notification pop-ups might be just a little hard to read sometimes, but they do look fantastic in these screenshots.
To install the pop-ups, all you have to do is throw them into the theme of your choice (Winterboard themes are kept in /Library/Themes). Unfortunately, I’ve been having trouble getting this (and other Winterboard themes) to work on my 3GS on iOS 4.2.1. The themes keep end up getting skewed and mis-aligned:
