I posted quite a while ago about the $0.01 offer from DefaultCase. Each case actually costs 4.00 USD in total ($0.01 + $3.99 shipping) and I ended up ordering three of them to play around with. I also posted a quick link to Larry Greenberg’s post on GearDiary about the DefaultCase’s quick customer support and concluded with “I really hope the cases are as good as the support!”
Well, my triple order is here, and has been for a while. Unfortunately, once I’m finished with this post, I very much doubt I’ll be keeping these cases around. They have a decent enough fit and the matte finish got to me intact, but there’s something about these cases that feels very cheap. The one white case I ordered arrived with a crack in the upper-right corner and red blotches along the inside, and smells of very cheap plastic (cases shouldn’t smell!).
The black cases are a little better, but have a very different fit from the white, and end up falling short of the iPhone’s chrome bezel one one side. The left side is completely level, but the right side of the case actually curves downwards and doesn’t offer as much coverage. Oh, and the cut-out for the camera lens is misaligned (though the cut-outs on the white case are perfect).
So here’s my advice if you’re considering ordering something from DefaultCase. Unless the company is able to iron out all of the problems in the white and black 3GS cases and create some sort of hybrid grey case, I’d suggest you save your penny and $3.99 in shipping because this $0.01 deal really was too good to be true.
