Quick Look: Speedtask for iPhone (and your browser)

The ideal Speedtask ($4.99) user is someone who needs a very basic checklist of items, three basic categories, and cloud syncing with a web app. If all of that sounds pretty good, then Speedtask may be right for you.

ROUND THE iPHONE WE GO

Although Speedtask does have a functional web app, the platform is definitely based around the iPhone (you require the iPhone app to create an account in the first place). However, the interfaces for both the iPhone and web apps are quite similar.

All you do is pick a date, type in a task name, and press done. If the mood strikes you, you can also choose one of three priorities to help you colour code your tasks.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

This system works well enough, provided you’re okay with planning only a couple of days ahead.

The one major gap in Speedtask is that it doesn’t deal well with rescheduling, and it can often be difficult to see which day you’re viewing in either app (and there’s no shortcut to return to Today).

You can move a task forward by one day, but that’s it — so it’s often better to erase and re-write a task than it is to play rescheduling hopscotch one day at a time.

SYNCING

Syncing is one of Speedtask’s strengths: it’s speedy and automatic on the iPhone and changes appear pretty much instantly in the web app after a refresh.

CONCLUSION

I’ve given Speedtask a try on and off for about a month now, but still haven’t gotten into it. It might make a decent secondary task list for quick little things you don’t want to forget (though $5 is a bit pricey for something that serves a secondary purposes), but I already use Notesy for that and I have Things for more major task management.

But if simple and cloud syncing are all you need, you might want to give Speedtask a shot.
